In Game of Thrones, we have seen a lot characters change majorly, over the years. One of the most important transformations, perhaps even the ultimate one, has been that of Sansa Stark. From being the whiny princess stereotype to becoming as fierce as her mother used to be, Sansa has been on quite a journey. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Sophie Turner, the actress who plays Sansa Stark, talked a little bit about her character.
In the sixth episode of Season 5, Sansa Stark was raped by her newly-forced husband, Ramsay Bolton. Sophie talked about how this scene ultimately inspired her activism. Sophie now works with Women for Women International, a charity organisation that provides aid to women in distressed regions. Sophie recently paid a visit to Rwanda, as a part of the same campaign. Talking about the scene, and her realization, she said :
“We kind of expected a bit of blow-back and a bit of controversy.
Rightly so, and it was quite a big reaction. At first I was kind of thinking, “Why are people complaining about a TV show when it’s happening all over the world and people aren’t really speaking about it?”, and that kind of annoyed me but then I realized it is a dialogue that needs to be had. It’s good to speak about it and make it less of a taboo and take the stigma away from it. And then.., women can feel comfortable to come out in the real world if it happens to them, and we can take action against it.”
She talked about a few other things, as well, like how she borrows her boyfriend’s HBO Go account, to watch the show, at times. Watch the interview, in three parts, below :
