Game of Thrones is getting ready for awards season, and we have a big change this year! According to a new exclusive report by Golden Derby, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) will be submitted to the 2018 Golden Globe Awards in the lead acting categories for Season 7, something HBO hasn’t done before. Read on!
The first time, we saw HBO submit Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Sean Bean (Ned Stark) for Game of Thrones Season 1 at the 2011 Emmys, but didn’t get a nomination. Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) has won the only Golden Globe for which he was nominated, back for Season 1 and has gotten nominated for an Emmy for all 6 years, and won for Seasons 1 and 5.
Other actors have also got a shot, with Dame Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell) getting nominated for guest actress for Seasons 3, 4, and 5, Lena Headey being nominated for Seasons 4, 5 and 6, Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) for Season 6, and Max Von Sydow (Three-Eyed Raven) with a guest actor nomination for Season 6.
Kit received his first Emmy nomination for Season 6, while Emilia has three, for seasons 3, 4, and 6. As the focus of the story shifted in Season 7 to peg Jon and Daenerys as the lead characters, and it seems the award submissions will reflect that.
This change might end up getting Kit and Emilia their first career nominations. Golden Globes haven’t featured Game of Thrones nearly as much as the Emmys, nor have either of the two been nominated in a lead category before, so this year might be the sweet spot!
The Golden Globe nominations will be revealed on December 11th. Do you think the King in the North and the Mother of Dragons will finally make it? Are you excited for the awards season? Tell us in the comments, down below!
