Game of Thrones is a show of epic proportions, and it’s not joke being the casting director of such a huge series. We all know the names of all the actors playing the big roles in Game of Thrones, but not many of us know Nina Gold. She is the casting director of the show, and is responsible for consistently getting spectacular talent onto the show, and also for casting the new generation heroes for the Star Wars series. In a recent interview with the International Edition of South China Morning Post, Nina Gold talked about the lack of diversity on the show, a topic which has always been in the talks. Read on!
Gold says that Game of Thrones, one of her biggest successes, almost didn’t happen. “It wasn’t really my cup of tea,”says Gold. When asked about diversity, Nina Gold says that it isn’t what it seems like, and that fans should “remember the series is based on books that are very descriptive and specific about the appearance of its characters.” She says that The film industry as whole is “already shifting towards greater diversity.”She went on to say :
“We are more aware that to not take diverse casting seriously is un-creative and silly. We’re all trying to do castings that reflect real life, and real life is full of all sorts of different people. We’ve got to have them all.”
When asked if she knew what was going to happen next on Game of Thrones, Gold said :
“[David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and George R.R. Martin] haven’t written the next lot yet. I don’t know where we are in the books vs the script race. They know what’s going to happen, but I don’t yet. I have several of my own theories.”
She didn’t however, disclose her theories.
Gold also talked about a few more things, including the new Star Wars casting process. You can read the whole interview, here.
While diversity remains an issue with a lot of shows, it does seem like Hollywood is taking a step forward towards solving the problem. What do you think? Tell us in the comments, below!
