Winter has arrived in Game of Thrones with the onset of war and it seems that HBO is fighting its own set of battles. The hackers who performed the latest massive security breach into HBO’s confidential documents and internal links have struck yet again, releasing a message sent by HBO to them as a response to the breach. Variety reports a copy of that message, which has HBO offering a bounty payment of $250,000 to the hackers. According to the message, it is a part of the programme in which “white hat IT professionals” are rewarded for “bringing these types of things to our attention.” The HBO official sent the following message to the hackers:
“As a show of good faith on our side, we are willing to commit to making a bug bounty payment of $250,000 to you as soon as we can establish the necessary account and acquire Bitcoin.”
Sources have revealed that although this message seems pretty mellow compared to how massive the security breach was, it is actually an appeal for the hacker to extend their ransom deadline. HBO believes that this bounty payment might protect the company from the kind of damage that other companies like Netflix and Sony have faced in the past. The hackers are being implored through this message to extend the ransom deadline since they had the advantage of surprising HBO with this hack.
“You have the advantage of having surprised us,” the message reads. “In the spirit of professional cooperation, we are asking you to extend your deadline for one week.”
In the video message sent by the hackers, they claimed to make $12 to $15 million per year, and taking that into account, the $250,000 payment is way short of their “six-months salary” request. HBO hasn’t commented on this matter yet. It seems that the hacker is hell bent on keeping HBO on their feet. We can only wonder what comes next.
