Game of Thrones is unarguably one of the most lauded shows in television history. In 2015, the program broke the record for the most Primetime Emmy Awards won by a series in a single year by taking home 12 of the 24 nominations. The prequel show House of The Dragon has also managed to win a Golden Globe, a first for the franchise. Hence, there’s no doubt both shows have produced some extraordinary characters.
Peter Dinklage’s role in Game of Thrones is in the top 5 greatest TV performances
Variety recently released a list curated by Clayton Davis ranking 61 performances from HBO’s best shows since its launch in 1972. Though the index was topped by James Gandolfini’s Tony Sopranos in the critically acclaimed show The Sopranos (quite unsurprisingly), Game of Thrones’ Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage, ranked 5th.
The top 5 performances, according to Variety, include:
- James Gandolfini – The Sopranos
- Carrie Coon – The Leftovers
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Veep
- Michael K. Williams – The Wire
- Peter Dinklage – Game of Thrones
Other Game of Thrones performances on the list
Game of Thrones was a cradle of some of the best actors in the industry coming together, hence there were more performances from the show that made it to the list. Apart from Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister, Lena Headey’s Cersei ranked 15, and Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen made it to 53. Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark also received an honorable mention.
