Game of Thrones Season 8 episode 4, “The Last of the Starks” had a lot of emotional turmoil for us in the store, but one character had a heartbreaking moment. After being made the Lord of Storm’s End, Gendry got down on one knee and asked Arya to be his lady and he was promptly rejected. In a recent interview, Joe Dempsie (Gendry) revealed his thoughts on the scene. Read on!
Joe Dempsie talked to Esquire about Gendry’s excitement, and how that led him to pop the question:
“Gendry just got a bit excited, didn’t he? He’d just been made a lord—he’d known for awhile now where he’s come from but the recognition of that by someone in authority has given him an ability to find a place in the world that I think he’s been searching for his entire life. And he just got a bit gassed and asked someone to marry him. And she quite rightly told him where to go. What a stupid question! I think he knows deep down in his heart of hearts there is no way Arya will ever be anyone’s lady.”
He then moved on to talk about how the conversation of Gendry-Arya was an uncomfortable one when the two characters met on screen, years ago:
“The most common thing Thrones fans have wanted to talk to me about over the years was this suggested relationship with Arya. I was always found that conversation quite uncomfortable at the time, particularly in the early years. I was a 25-year-old man being asked whether I would like my character to get together with an at-the-time 14-year-old actress. It was always something I thought wasn’t fair to ask me personally … I felt there needed to be an understanding that even though what we’re making is fantasy, actual execution of that had to take place in reality. It was never really something I gave much thought to.”
He continued:
“It was strange for me having known [Williams] since she was 11 or 12 years old and being asked to play out a scene like that. That discomfort I had initially seemed to have been shared by quite a lot of people who have watched that episode, too. But I found the subsequent conversation actually really quite interesting. What that scene ended up doing was forcing people to confront their own hypocrisy in a way”
“I think the root cause of that unease and discomfort in a lot of viewers is because they feel like they’ve seen her grow up on screen. That’s something that happens to us all—we all start off young and then the majority of us start having sex and we’re all perfectly capable to finding that journey out for ourselves. But we still find it difficult to watch someone else take that journey, say, on a TV screen.”
Joe also discussed his last day filming for Game of Thrones:
“There were a couple of others finishing on the same day as me, which I was pleased about. I thanked [Benioff and Weiss] for an amazing experience. And then they moved on to the next person, and I looked across and I saw their lip tremble and it was at that point that I learned I’m fine until I see someone else trying not to cry, at which point I’m a mess.”

Most of the celebrities we see on the big screen started from humble beginnings. Some of the Game of Thrones stars joined the series young. They sort of grew up with the series like Maisie Williams (Arya Stark). Others joined the show when they were already famous. Like the Scottish actor Iain Glenn, who played the heroic knight Ser Jorah Mormont.
Iain didn’t initially consider acting as a career. He was kind of forced into it by his friends while studying at Aberdeen University. Glenn talked to the Irish Examiner about his humble beginnings.
“It was there that friends of mine got involved and I was slightly dragged against my will into it. I had no idea what actors were and that you could earn a living for what they did.”
He continued, “I felt that I could occupy that space in my imagination where I believe the world in which I was standing in and seemed to be able to project that in a small way. I just got really addicted very quickly for that feeling. I bumped into it very accidentally, I had no great desire, I didn’t even know what it was until I was 18, really.”

Sometimes a show becomes so popular, it often hides other accomplishments of its cast. The show becomes their identity, people often recognize them by their character from the show. Game of Thrones is an example of such a franchise. The fantasy series became the biggest show of the past decade, both in terms of its budget and viewership. However, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister on the show, is done talking about it.
In a recent interview with the Independent, Waldau revealed he wanted fans to recognize his other works too. He said, “Over those eight seasons, I did two films every year more or less. But obviously, the success of the show, which is so enormous, makes however big those other successes are pale in comparison. I worked more weeks on other shows than Game of Thrones. In my world, those other jobs took up much more space than Jaime Lannister did.”
One such job was the small-town thriller The Silencing, released earlier this year. “The script had been around for a couple of years,” he said. “I just liked the basic story of a guy who’s a drunk and then loses his daughter. Normally, in a story, that’s when the change would happen, but it doesn’t. I thought that was interesting.”

An actor needs to interact with the camera, co-stars and objects on the set to make the most out of their performance. There are times when they get attached to a prop on-set. It becomes a part of their character and memories connected to their performance on the show. Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner brought the prop used as the Winterfell throne to her home. Another Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal is very fond of a prop from a set (not from Game of Thrones, though).
Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian has managed to steal the show from the series’ main star, Pedro himself. Although, Pedro doesn’t seem to complain. In fact, the actor himself seems to have fallen in love with the charms of Baby Yoda.
In PEOPLE’s latest issue, Pascal revealed he was ‘immediately convinced’ to join the series after seeing Baby Yoda’s concept art. He often ended up ‘cooing a little bit’ on set with the puppet.
“I’d then have conversations in the same way that we did when we were kids with our own little toys,” Pascal said. “It has everything to do with the amount of work that these people have put into it, because it’s a very, very special creation, and it feels as such when you see it in person.”
