George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones series is amongst the most famous fantasy literary works in the world today. Symbolism matters a lot in the world of Westeros, just as in the medieval period it was based off of. With Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon on the rise, people are already looking for various connections between the two, and the shared symbolism that always seems to be a huge deal in Martin’s works. The upcoming prequel’s showrunner Ryan Condal recently talked about how that works in House of The Dragon, especially in regards to the Targaryen sigil.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Condal talked about the importance of the Targaryen sigil in both Game of Thrones and House of The Dragon. He said, “The truth of the matter is you think you’ve seen the Targaryen sigil a lot in the original Game of Thrones, but actually it’s not in Game of Thrones that much. You’ve seen it on books and Funko Pops and things like that.”
“That was how far and high the Targaryen dynasty had fallen, that the sigil did not exist really anymore until Daenerys brought it back about. So we chose to go down a road that I think honored where Daenerys left us off versus where people think it all started. But I will say, stay tuned. Hopefully it will all make sense in due time.”
