One’s wish for death is always met with disdainful or sympathetic reactions. It may just be a whim amidst the chaos that’s life, but many of us might have wished so at some step in our lives. The land of the seven kingdoms and beyond is really cool with granting wishes of such nature. All you need to do is be confident that you won’t die, mess with some powerful people, and then impatiently rush for a conclusive evidence of your strength over them. You are sorted of life! Or if it’s too much to do, you could be an innocent and well-meaning person doing no harm to anyone. Either way, death is certain.
Famous singer & songwriter, Ed Sheeran talked of a similar wish for his Lannister soldier cameo in Game of Thrones season 7. The appearance was not well received by most, some even deeming it as one of the worse things that happened in Westeros.
And the musician must have been closely listening to the reviews. In a chat with Buzzfeed, he talked about a host of things. He is continually playing with kittens, and the video has an overall adorable feeling to it.
He spoke about his Apple music documentary Songwriter, what inspires him to be competitive, music choices, his writing, touring, cats, and of course, Game of Thrones.
“What do you think your character has been up to since we last saw him?” asked the voice in the interview. He answered, “I know what Game of Thrones fans hoped happened to my character. I’m sure they think my character got brutally, brutally murdered, but I think my character is still out there. I think he’s chillin’.” “Like the cat (in hand),” he laughed.
“It was fun being in Game of Thrones,” he continued, “but I definitely think they should’ve killed me off in the episode. I reckon that probably would’ve been the redemption for people that didn’t like it.”
In a making-video, showrunner David Benioff had said, “Ed Sheeran has got a beautiful voice, and we knew that he was a fan of the show, and we knew that Maisie [Williams, who plays Arya Stark] was obsessed with him. So we always thought it would be fun to try to get him into a Maisie scene at some point.”
Honestly, I rewatched this scene, where Ed Sheeran sings a song, “Hands of gold are always cold, but a woman’s hands are warm…,” and I liked it. It’s a bunch of Lannister soldiers in the Riverlands, Sheeran one of them, and Arya arrives. They offer her food and wine. One expects something bad may happen here now. Both the parties are careful yet somehow relaxed. The soldiers talk about their purpose being there, the irony of their job, and the restlessness of visiting home again. Arya‘s on her way to King’s Landing, but why? Nonchalantly, she says, “I am going to kill the queen.” Silence ensues, and then everyone is in splits. They were strangers who were kind to each other.
This was one of the underplayed and humane moments of the show. And frankly, Ed Sheeran was alright.
If you have any thoughts about the scene or Ed Sheeran in general, do tell us in the comments.
