Game of Thrones is one of the biggest shows on the planet, and it’s responsible for revolutionizing television, making it the cash cow that it has become. Although binge watching has become mainstream with the likes of Netflix that release all episodes of a season, together, Game of Thrones still remains one of the most binge-able shows ever. However doing that might not be the best thing for you. Read on!
The study was conducted by Patient.info, and included over 2000 people, all studied with regards to binge-watching TV shows, of which Game of Thrones is a definitive part. Speaking to The Sun, Patient.info clinical director Dr. Sarah Jarvis said:
“We have long been aware of the physical effects that come along with being a couch potato, but we should also be conscious that if we don’t moderate our TV-watching habits it can also be highly detrimental to our, and particularly our children’s, mental wellbeing.”
Apparently, 27% of the subjects admitted to delaying sleep for between 1.5-2 hours to keep bingewatching. 22% admitted they delayed sleep for 2.5-3 hours, and even after all that delay it becomes hard to fall asleep when tried.
“It affects latency – the time it takes to get to sleep – as the bright light disrupts the body’s circadian rhythms by suppressing the evening rise of melatonin.”
Says Lisa Artis, from The Sleep Council, who talked some more about the study:
“While it may seem harmless to veg out in front of the TV, excessive screen time has an impact on sleep.
It affects the time it takes to get to sleep – as the bright light disrupts the body’s rhythms.
Violence, gore or suspense may leave you feeling anxious and could contribute to tossing and turning.”
That’s not all, 34% of the subjects said they experienced “feelings of emptiness” after finishing a show, while another 20% felt “low mood and depression.”
So maybe space out your viewings next time around, fellow Game of Thrones fans! After all, it’s a long time till the final season hits, so time will not be a constraint.
